Albert Ludolph is the Chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of Ulm since 1996. After studying medicine in Mainz and Göttingen (1973 – 1979), in 1984 he became a boarded neurologist at the University of Münster He completed his habilitation in 1987. His scientific work was influenced by extended stays at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York (1984-1985) and the Oregon Health Science University in Portland, Oregon (1990-1992). After working in the Department of Epileptology at the University of Bonn and as Senior Consultant at the Department of Neurology at Charité, Humboldt University, Berlin, in 1996 he took over the Department of Neurology at the University of Ulm. His research interests focus on motoneuron diseases (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, neurolathyrism and others) as well as on frontal dementias, Huntington’s chorea and atypical Parkinson syndromes (MSA, PSP), experimentally, translationally and clinically. The current focus of his work is the translation of experimental findings into clinical trials, especially in ALS. This is facilitated by the help of biomarkers (genetics, transcriptome, proteome, imaging). Since 2018, he has been in charge of the DZNE Ulm site, which also focuses on treatment development in ALS, frontal dementia and Huntington’s disease. In the term of office 2019 to 2021 he is president of the German Neuroscience Society.
